CALCULATION METHOD

How to calculate gravel volume, weight and cost

MetricSketch first calculates the base volume from your dimensions, known area and depth, or a volume you already know. It then applies the extra-material percentage and uses the selected bulk density to estimate gravel weight. Add a supplier price when you also want an estimated material cost.

Volume = Length × Width × Depth
  1. Measure the project.Enter length and width, a known surface area, or a known base volume.
  2. Set the gravel depth.Dimensions and area modes use the entered depth to turn the footprint into a three-dimensional material volume.
  3. Add an ordering allowance. The extra-material percentage is applied on top of the calculated base volume.
  4. Estimate the weight. The calculator converts final volume into US tons or metric tonnes using the selected or custom gravel density.
  5. Estimate material cost.Enter a price per US ton or tonne to calculate the material-only cost.

GRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE

How much gravel do I need?

The amount of gravel you need depends on the surface area, the planned depth and the bulk density of the material. This calculator keeps those parts separate so you can use the measurements you already have instead of forcing every project into the same input method.

Use dimensions

Choose Dimensions when you know the length, width and depth of a rectangular area such as a driveway, path, base or garden project.

Use a known area

Choose Area when you already know the square footage or square meters. Enter the area and the required depth to calculate the base volume.

Use a known volume

Choose Volume when you already have a cubic-yard or cubic-meter figure and mainly want to estimate weight, extra material and cost.

Understanding your gravel estimate

Gravel in cubic yards and cubic meters

Volume tells you how much space the gravel occupies. US projects commonly use cubic yards, while metric projects use cubic meters. MetricSketch displays both so you can compare supplier information without doing a separate conversion.

Convert gravel volume to tons or tonnes

Weight is estimated from volume and bulk density. Gravel density varies with stone type, grading, moisture and compaction, so the material presets are planning values. If your supplier provides a density, enter that value as a custom density for a more project-specific estimate.

Extra gravel and ordering allowance

The extra-material field adds a percentage on top of the base volume. Use it to account for project conditions such as uneven grading, settlement, compaction or a small ordering margin. You can set the percentage to zero when you only want the calculated base quantity.

Estimate gravel material cost

Enter a price per US ton or metric tonne to estimate material cost. The result covers the gravel quantity only; delivery, minimum-order charges, taxes, labor and equipment are not included unless they are already built into the price you enter.

Example: a 40 ft × 18 ft gravel area

A rectangular area measuring 40 ft by 18 ft has an area of 720 ft². At a depth of 4 in, the base volume is about 8.89 yd³. With a 10% extra-material allowance, the order volume becomes about 9.78 yd³. Using the calculator's default General gravel density of 1.55 US tons/yd³, that is approximately 15.16 US tons. Change the density to your supplier's value when you have product-specific information.

Calculator results are planning estimates. Confirm material density, delivery units and ordering requirements with your supplier before purchasing.

GRAVEL CALCULATOR FAQ

Common questions before ordering gravel

These answers explain how to use the estimate and where supplier information matters most.

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?

For a rectangular project, multiply length by width and gravel depth to get volume, then convert that volume into cubic yards or cubic meters. MetricSketch performs those conversions automatically and can also start from a known area or known volume.

How do I convert cubic yards of gravel to tons?

Multiply the gravel volume by the material's bulk density. There is no single tons-per-yard value for every gravel product, so the calculator lets you choose a material preset or enter a custom supplier density.

Should I add extra gravel to the calculated volume?

Use the extra-material field when you want an ordering allowance for conditions such as uneven grade, handling loss or other project variation. Set it to zero when you only want the calculated base quantity.

Can I use this as a pea gravel or crushed stone calculator?

Yes. The material selector includes General gravel, Pea gravel, Crushed stone and Large rock presets. You can also enter a custom density when your supplier provides a product-specific value.

Does the gravel cost estimate include delivery or labor?

No. The optional price field estimates material cost from the calculated weight only. Delivery, taxes, minimum-order fees, labor and equipment are not added unless they are already included in the price you enter.

Should I use the Gravel Calculator or Driveway Planner?

Use this calculator for one gravel quantity or material layer. Use the Driveway Planner when you want to plan separate sub-base, base and surface layers, estimate truckloads and build a driveway shopping list.
