CONSTRUCTION CALCULATOR

Asphalt Calculator

Estimate how much asphalt you need for a driveway, parking area or paved surface in US tons or metric tonnes. Start with dimensions, a known area or volume, adjust asphalt density, combine multiple paved areas and estimate material cost before you order.

MATERIAL ASSUMPTIONS

Density & pricing

The default density is a planning value from the calculation engine. Replace it with a project or supplier density when available. Currency switching changes the label only; it does not perform FX conversion.

Use dimensions when you know the length, width and asphalt thickness.

ESTIMATED ORDER

—US tons

Estimated asphalt weight including the selected extra-material allowance.

Base volume—yd³ before extra
Order volume—yd³ including extra
Metric reference—tonnes to order
Surface area—ft²
Estimated material costAdd a priceOptional supplier pricing

Asphalt weight depends on density. Confirm the mix, compacted density, ordering units and supplier requirements before purchasing.

MULTIPLE PAVED AREAS

Build one combined asphalt order.

Add the current calculation to a temporary paving project, then combine driveway sections, parking areas and known asphalt volumes. The selected extra percentage is applied once to the combined base volume.

No paved areas added yet. Calculate a dimensions, known-area or known-volume estimate above, then add it here.

Project areas are temporary for this browser session. The calculator stores each area's base volume and recalculates the combined order using the current extra percentage, density and pricing assumptions.

CALCULATION METHOD

How to calculate asphalt tonnage, volume and cost

MetricSketch first calculates a base asphalt volume from dimensions, known area and thickness, or a volume you already know. It then applies your extra-material allowance and uses asphalt density to convert volume into US tons or metric tonnes. Add supplier pricing when you also want an estimated material cost.

Base volume = Length × Width × Thickness
Order volume = Base volume × (1 + Extra %)
Order weight = Order volume × Asphalt density
  1. Measure the paved area.Enter length and width, a known surface area, or a known asphalt volume.
  2. Set the asphalt thickness.Dimensions and known-area modes use thickness to turn the paved footprint into a material volume.
  3. Add an ordering allowance. The extra-material percentage is applied to the calculated base volume.
  4. Convert volume to asphalt tonnage. The calculator uses the entered density to estimate US tons or metric tonnes for the order.
  5. Estimate material cost.Enter a supplier price per ton or tonne to calculate an optional material-only cost.

THREE INPUT PATHS

Calculate asphalt from dimensions, area or known volume.

Dimensions

Use length, width and thickness for a rectangular driveway, parking area or paved section.

Known area

Start from square feet or square meters when the surface area is already known, then enter the asphalt thickness.

Known volume

Start from cubic yards or cubic meters when a base asphalt volume has already been calculated elsewhere.

QUICK EXAMPLE

20 ft × 10 ft driveway at 3 in thick

A 20 ft × 10 ft paved area at 3 in thick has a base asphalt volume of about 1.85 yd³. With a 5% extra-material allowance, the order volume is about 1.94 yd³. At the default planning density of 145 lb/ft³, that is approximately 3.81 US tons of asphalt. Add your supplier price per ton to estimate material cost.

Asphalt density, lift design and ordering rules vary by mix and supplier. Confirm the project specification, compacted density, minimum loads and delivery requirements before purchasing.

ASPHALT CALCULATOR FAQ

Common questions before ordering asphalt

These answers explain how the tonnage estimate is built and which project assumptions should be confirmed with your supplier.

How do I calculate how much asphalt I need?

Calculate the paved volume from length, width and thickness, then convert that volume to weight using asphalt density. MetricSketch performs the unit conversions and can add an extra-material allowance.

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?

Asphalt tonnage is estimated by multiplying the final material volume by asphalt density. Because density varies with the mix and project, use a supplier or project value when one is available.

Can I calculate asphalt from square feet?

Yes. Use Known area when you already have the paved surface in square feet or square meters, then enter the planned asphalt thickness to calculate volume and weight.

What asphalt density should I use?

The calculator includes a default planning density, but it is not a substitute for the mix design or supplier specification. Replace it with the project-specific compacted density whenever possible.

Should I add extra asphalt to the calculated quantity?

Use the extra-material field when you want an ordering allowance for project variation or handling. Set it to zero when you only want the calculated base quantity.

Does the asphalt cost estimate include delivery or labor?

No. The optional price field estimates material cost from the calculated asphalt weight only. Delivery, minimum-load charges, taxes, labor and equipment are not added unless they are already included in the supplier price you enter.
